I made this video with Yoda who is my crazy ferret. Yoda doesn’t know any tricks and I will show you how you can teach your ferret one trick very fast. Since ferrets are energetic and really flexible they can do impressive things without effort. I will show you now how to teach your ferret to do a roll over, which can be tricky with a cat or dog.
For the roll over trick, you’ll need:
1) Treat your ferret loves
2) Ferret willing to participate in this trick
Roll over Trick Step By Step Guide
Find some treat that your ferret loves because it needs to keep him occupied. You can use kibble, meat, anything your ferret likes. Cut it into smaller pieces so you can repeat it more times. A good idea is to remove all toys and other distractions to keep him focused and let the training begin.
1.STEP: Show Your Ferret A Treat
Put a treat in your hand and place the hand near your ferret’s nose so he can smell the treat, but don’t give it to your ferret. The goal is for your ferret to know you have a treat in your hand and that he has to follow your hand to get a treat.
2.STEP: Do A Roll Over
Now that he knows you have a treat, you’ll have his attention. The next step you have to do slowly so your ferret can follow you. What you have to do is circle your hand around your ferret’s head. Your ferret will follow you which will result in him laying on his back. But that doesn’t mean you have to stop. Continue with the movement until you made the full circle and your ferret does the roll over following your hand.
3.STEP: Give Him A Treat
Now that your ferret made the roll over as you desired, you can give him the treat in your hand. It is important to reward your ferret after a good job, you can even give him cuddles and kisses too.
4.STEP: Repeat And Repeat
Repeat for few times until he realizes what he needs to do. That means repeat for a couple of times in a row and that is why you had to cut the treat into smaller pieces. Also, don’t forget to repeat the entire process every day, two times a day for at least a week. Ferrets are smart and they will figure out what you want from them pretty quickly.
5.STEP: Upgrade Roll Over Command
Now that your ferret does the roll over trick with your hand around his head, you can upgrade the trick. The next thing you want to do is to make a small circle in front of your ferret. It should be near his face so that he connects the circle to the roll over trick. That way you won’t have to circle around his head but in front of it.
BONUS TIPS
You can say ”Rollover” during the trick but that part is more for you than for your ferret. The ferret will focus on your hands and not on your voice so don’t forget to make small circles in front of him.
Practice every day with your ferret and he’ll learn that trick in no time. It is not hard for a ferret to perform roll over so they will do it quickly and without too much trouble.
